Whew! The Trek is Complete!

It has been such a long and tiring week, but somehow it flew by. I have to go back to work tomorrow -- BLEK! I logged into my work email Friday night and luckily only had about 550 unread emails. It took about an hour, but I got it down to about 80 that I have to actually re-read tomorrow morning.

I know you've all been dying to know how the journey went, so here's a re-cap.
Tuesday: Met Brittany and her husband, Scott, for breakfast at Blue Plate (gonna miss that place) and then Brittany and I went on our way...
We drove through Wyoming (where our cashier @ Hastings was missing all 4 of her bottom teeth) and then down to Denver. We arrived in Denver after dark and we were super tired. Too tired to eat, in fact, so we didn't go out to eat. Instead, we decided to find a grocery store and grab some juice and yogurt. The nearest store was a WalMart, which, after hanging out with Brooke and Scott for so many years, I don't have any aversion to. Well, not most WalMarts.. This one was a different story -- we weren't in the best part of town and we got a little bit nervous more than once. In the end, we survived.
Wednesday: Woke up bright and early and begun our awesome drive to Wichita. All I can really say is this had to be one of the most boring days of my life. Anyone and everyone who has ever said "avoid driving through Kansas" really knows what they are talking about. The only thing that kept us going was wondering which "historical site" we'd see next. I'm telling you, every sign on the side of the road indicated something to stop and see at the next exit. One of the areas had signs about a five-legged steer. We were tempted, but we steered clear (hehe). There were also signs for "authentic Scandanavian shops." In the middle of freaking Kansas. I never knew Kansas was such a hot spot for foreigners!
Thursday: Woke up even earlier than the day before and headed on our path to Memphis. As soon as we left the Kansas border, things got much better. Oklahoma and Arkansas were both relatively pretty and we listened to an MP3 book by Chelsea Handler (who can be a bit crass, but is HILARIOUS). We rolled into Memphis at around 3:30 and got to Graceland just after 4. We took a tour of Graceland, some of Elvis and Priscilla's planes and cars, and then a couple of other exhibits. We also stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel. It seems a lot bigger from the outside. I might recommend going to check it out, but I don't think I'd ever tell anyone to stay there. I was never huge on Elvis, but holy moly, I have a new respect for the guy. I really had no idea that he did so much. Of course, the tours are only going to talk about the good things, but I was still pretty amazed. Plus, he was pretty cute. I wouldn't mind finding a young-Elvis look alike to be my baby daddy!
After our Elivis tours, Brittany and I decided that we were in need of a massage, so we found a Massage Envy in the area. You know the commercials that talk about the Utah College of Massage Therapy being one of the best massage schools? I think it must be true, because Britt and I both had nothing very good to say about our massages. I guess I found another thing I'll miss about Utah -- I never had a bad massage at the Sugarhouse location. Hopefully, they'll be better out here.
Friday: We left Memphis extremely early. The drive through Mississippi and Alabama was beautiful. We passed through Talledega (as in the best movie ever!) and didn't stop too many times. We got into Georgia earlier than expected, so I called my apartment complex to see if I could move in a day early. My car was SO heavy from everything I brought with me -- we both needed to lighten the load ("we" being me and my car). After unpacking at my apartment, we checked into the last hotel on our journey, then went to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D. I really enjoyed the movie. The art and cinematography were amazing!
Saturday: We slept in. It was awesome. We didn't have anywhere to be (other than out of the hotel by 11), so we took every minute possible. We went to breakfast and to my apartment to drop off the rest of our stuff, and then we went to play tourist. We went into Atlanta where the World of Coke and the Georgia Aquarium are. They have a pass where you can do both for $36 instead of paying full price for each. The World of Coke was a lot of fun. I had only gone to the exhibit in Vegas once and I always wanted to go back to taste all of the soda flavors from around the world. I ended up leaving a little bit sick to my stomach though. Too much sugar! The aquarium was pretty cool, too, but we went on a BAD day. I would like to go back sometime when it's not so busy -- maybe on a Wednesday afternoon at 11? Lol. So, if any of you feel like coming to GA to see the largest aquarium in the world, let me know. You can sleep on my couches (when they finally arrive).

I will post pictures of my new apartment when I have all of my stuff back. I don't think that pictures of an empty space will really do it justice. Here are a couple to tide you over.
These are my scary stairs to my upstairs (bedroom, bathroom, closet). I think that I'll get used to them eventually, but I see a broken arm or leg in the near future.

This is a view from the top of my stairs/loft. The Chattahoochee River is in my backyard (between the trees and the house in the background). The whole area is pretty killer. I just hope there are no killers in the area!

Is This Real Life?

The moving company just called to tell me that they'll be here in about an hour. Should I start freaking out now? I think I will.
Oh wait, I'm pretty sure I had my nervous breakdown on Friday night when they told me they were coming a day early. Luckily, I had already planned on packing like crazy all day yesterday. A few people offered to help me pack, which I truly appreciate -- I just wish I wasn't such a control freak and would have accepted their help. Just kidding. I didn't really have too much to pack after I did my "spring cleaning" in December. I think the final count was 22 boxes and 9 tupperware bins.
I also sold my washer, dryer and elliptical machine.
Ask me if I put the cash in savings.
Nope. I bought a 32GB iPod Touch instead :-D
The way I look at it is that part of the elliptical was my Christmas present, so really, I've just traded it in for something that's easier to ship across the country. Am I wrong?
Oh, and I made it to all of the restaurants I wanted to hit before leaving this great state. Well, except for Cafe Med. So, if anyone wants to go there for dinner on Monday night, let me know!

Oh, the Places You'll Go

... and the places I'll miss (in no particular order):
Hires
Red Iguana
Bombay House
Cafe Rio
Stoneground
The Bayou
Yanni's
Porcupine
Au Naturale
Cafe Med
Lonestar Taqueria
Desert Edge
Blue Plate

Maybe this means I'll lose some weight after I embark on the next chapter of my life?! I think I might be crazy for moving to the South when I hate BBQ sauce, pork and grits. That being said, I hope to get my fill from each of these places before I set sail (in my car, and on land, of course) on March 3rd. If anyone would like to join me, you know who to call. No, not Ghostbusters.

Oh, but good news: They have Trader Joe's in Georgia! Yes!

The Haps

It hasn't even been a month, but I'm already writing again.

Christmas was good. My parents and little sister, Allysa, came down from Idaho and the BYUians came up to the SLC from Provo. Jen, Lys and I spent Christmas Eve putting together my eliptical machine and then we forced Allysa into watching White Christmas. Can you believe she had never watched that before? Who raised her?!?! On Christmas day, we went over to my Grandma's house where my parents were staying and played games and snacked on pita chips and hummus. Yum. Then, we went to see Sherlock Holmes. It was a very entertaing movie. When we got home, we had a delish dinner waiting for us: steak, homemade rolls and tartiflette. Every year I have to thank Heather for marrying Dustin (a.k.a. Dut-stin, DuStan Neegard) because otherwise, we would have never been introduced to tartiflette. So, this is your public shout-out, Head and Dus.
Here's an online recipe, not much different from ours. I highly suggest trying it out. http://www.cuisine-french.com/cgi/mdc/l/en/recettes/tartiflette_ill.html

New Year's Eve was unbelievable. I think I went to bed at around 9 or 9:30. Awesome, I know.

Since the beginning of the new year, I've seen a lot of friends that I don't make time to see enough. I went and saw Amy and her cute little baby girl, Addie. Lil Miss Addie was TINY! Last weekend, I went to dinner with Brittany and Nicole and caught up on everything going on in their lives. And, today, I'm meeting up with Brooke and Megan for lunch. It's always so much fun to get together with the people who have been in your life for so long. It's crazy how all of the old inside jokes come back and even though it may have been months since you last connected, you pick up exactly where you left off. If any of you ever read this, here's your shout-out, too!

I finally broke down and bought another copy of Windsor Pilates. I somehow lost all of my workout DVDs a couple of years ago and had been missing them. I know the infomercials are long over, but I'm telling you, Windsor Pilates kicks your ass and takes names. The set I bought is not quite what I had before, but it will do. I refused to spend another $100 on DVDs that I've already bought, so I went the eBay way. $15 bucks later, I've got my two-pack started. Hahahahahhaha. I crack myself up!

December 21, 2009

Thank you, thank you.

I'll take my bow in advance for gracing you all with a new post. Ha!
Top 5 things that are new with me:
1. I got a new car in September.
2. I cooked (well, helped) my first Thanksgiving dinner this year.
3. I'm almost finished cleaning/organizing my "junk room" (see post from March/April).
4. I bought a Kitchen-Aid mixer and have made 2 HUGE batches of cookies and 1 pan of my mom's DELICIOUS cinnamon twists.
5. I'm actually dreaming of a White Christmas (it's not the same without it).
So, in all seriousness, the reason I decided to finally sign on and type away happened to me tonight. I ran to the grocery to stock up on my primary staple (Lean Cuisines) because my freezer was bare and my fridge was even barer (?). I had a basket that was full of food (still no more than 15 items) when I walked up to the express checkout lane. There was one lady paying for her loot, the next person in line had her basket right next to the cashier, and then a couple of feet down was a pile of candy. The pile was just sitting there with no owner. Soon enough, the second lady was checking out and being the next human in line, I moved my basket ahead of the pile. About 5 seconds before I started checking out, this very unpleasant excuse of a woman came up behind me and said "I was ahead of you." So I retorted, "You left." Then, she looked me in the eyes and said,"I'm going next." So I replied, "Um... I didn't know that you could save a place in line with your candy, fatass."
Alright, I didn't really say that, but I wanted to. Instead, I said, "Oh, you are?" After she said very matter of factly, "Yes, I am," I gave up. I said "That's fine. I'm in no hurry," and let her go ahead of me. UNBELIEVABLE, RIGHT?!
It's so funny to me how some people just have NO manners whatsoever. I mean, do you think I would have cared at all if she came back to her place in line and said "I'm in a big hurry because I almost lost an ounce of water weight today and I need more bon bons to eat before I lose another one, so do you mind if I have my place back?" Ugh.
On the flip side, I became very popular in the grocery story almost immediately. Complete strangers were apologizing to me for fatty's outstanding class. Ah well.

Slurry in a Hurry

I stopped by 7-11 on my way back to work from lunch yesterday because I was extremely grouchy and need a pick-me-up. I went for "the usual" Dr. Pepper and Laffy Taffy. As stupid as the jokes are, Laffy Taffy always seems to brighten my day.
The worst joke ever: What do you call a fly with no wings?
Dun, dun, dun...
A walk.
So, after I got back to work, I was reading the lame jokes to my co-worker who never ceases to make me question every ingredient in the food I eat. I decided to take a look at the ingredients in Laffy Taffy and one of them caught me off guard: sodium alginate. My first thought was "salty algae?" and then I found out it's even worse -- Thank you Wikipedia!
"...the pimento stuffing in prepared cocktail olives is usually injected as a slurry at the same time that the stone is ejected; the slurry is subsequently set by immersing the olive in a solution of a calcium salt which causes rapid gelation by electrostatic cross-linking. A similar process can be used to make "chunks" of everything from cat food through "reformed" ham or fish to "fruit" pieces for pies."
When the words used to describe a food additive are "slurry" and "chunks" I would rather steer clear. And, so begins a life without my favorite candy...
Oh yeah, and people wonder why I hate green olives?

Movies From My Past

I’m sitting here watching Three Men and a Baby and can’t help but think about all of the awesome movies that helped shape my childhood. I spent many a sleepover with friends and cousins watching these.
I am sure that I will leave some out, but here goes (in no particular order).
Honey I Shrunk the Kids
Batteries Not Included
Three Men and a Baby
The Great Outdoors
Look Who’s Talking
Summer School
Little Monsters
Captain Ron

Uncle Buck
Karate Kid
Sister Act
Gremlins
Mr. Mom

Ghost
Clue

There is nothing better than watching these movies as an adult and realizing that 1) my parents were crazy for letting me watch this smut; 2) clothes in the 80s/early 90s really were freaking awesome, although I would never want to dress like that again; 3) the backdrops and sets were even better than the clothes were; 4) I must have an amazing memory to still know most of the lines and the songs; 5) some of the storylines are soooo stupid, yet soooo classic!
